Kerbey Lane Cafe NorthWest, Austin, Texas

In 2015 I moved back to Austin, after leaving in the 1990’s with my husband to ‘find’ ourselves in Detroit Michigan. When I returned, I didn’t recognize the city. It had changed so much. Daily something closed, something was torn down, something was built. I couldn’t keep up. My photography style, which prior to moving back, had been fixated on architecture; old buildings, urban decay, etc. Was out of place here. The effect it had on my art was to focus more closely, to introspect. Try to adapt to the change that was happening all around me. Making me feel small.

I have always been interested in the secret lives of little people. I can’t be the only one? So many movies, so many books on the subject. My passion started when I was young, with the Borrowers’ book series. I don’t think it ever stopped from that point.

I have shown primarily in Austin and Fort Worth. Won a first-place award for “Feelin’ Funny” from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Had Eggman and Hand’s Free in the People’s Gallery at City Hall. I have the Little Wrangler riding his cactus at the Moxy Hotel in West Campus. I have had “Wish you were Here” little man with his dog in a terrarium on the magazine cover “360 West” in Fort Worth. These are accomplishments I am proud of. But what I am most proud of is the community service I have done since starting my Small World photography.

Giving back with my photography skills has always made me feel good about myself. But once Covid hit, it was definitely a lifesaver. During Covid, getting out and taking photos of shelter kittens at Austin Pets Alive, plants at the Wildflower Center, and once I was able, helping document what Art from The Streets was doing to keep their artists connected and afloat through the pandemic became my passions.
